چکیده

The Japanese geostationary meteorological satellite GMS-5, or also known as ”Himawari,” is positioned at 140◦E above the equator, and serves as a powerful tool for monitoring typhoons on the Pacific Ocean. This satellite is best suited for the monitoring of typhoons because of frequent observation, wide coverage, and fixed scan range. However, the degradation of effective resolution due to earth curvature arises as a limitation to the monitoring of typhoons in South East Asia. To improve the quality of typhoon imagery over those areas, here we propose to solve this problem by means of combining GMS satellite data with NOAA polar orbiting satellite data, in particular those received at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. We compare the characteristics of satellite imagery from those two satellites with an example, and demonstrates ideas on the comprehensive collection of typhoon imagery.

The Collection of Typhoon Image Data and the Establishment of Typhoon Information Databases Under International Research Collaboration between Japan and Thailand

This paper describes our ongoing project under international research collaboration between Japan (National Institute of Informatics) and Thailand (Asian Institute of Technology) for the collection of typhoon image data and the establishment of typhoon information databases. Statistics on past typhoon records reveal that approximately one thirds of the typhoons formed in the Northwest Pacific b...

An assessment of the accuracy of DOLA’s northern Australian NOAA-AVHRR Fire Affected Area (FAA) map products - appendix 2

A standard method for assessing the accuracy of fire mapping derived from NOAA-AVHRR imagery was applied to five Landsat scenes sampling different regions across northern Australia. The procedure involved the undertaking of: (1) detailed ground verification exercises (using ground and aerial transects) at the time of Landsat overpasses; (2) assessment of the accuracy of fire mapping derived fro...

A simplified method for estimating the total water vapor content over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR channels 4 and 5

A simplified method for estimating the total amount of atmospheric water vapor, , over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR Channels 4 and 5 is presented. This study has been carried out using simulated AVHRR data at 11 and 12 m (with MODTRAN 3.5 code and the TIGR database) and AVHRR, PODAAC, and AVISO databases provided by the Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg-France), NASA-NOAA, and Météo France,...

Fast Geometric Correction Algorithm of Noaa Avhrr Image

This paper presents a algorithm for the geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR data by using polynomial scan and pixel function. Preprocessings including tangent correction and earth curvature correction can be reduced the order of these functions. Using this method, it was possible to make the geometrically corrected image very fast. Also the precision of geometric correction is discussed.

AVHRR GAC SST Reanalysis Version 1 (RAN1)

In response to its users’ needs, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) initiated reanalysis (RAN) of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC; 4 km) sea surface temperature (SST) data employing its Advanced Clear Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) retrieval system. Initially, AVHRR/3 data from five NOAA and two Metop satellites from 2002 ...
